Vice President, Regional General Counsel, EMEA

Align is a manufacturer of prescription medical technologies that operates notably in EMEA with over 5,000 employees, three business units, manufacturing, treatment planning, and R&D in the Region. Operating out of Align Technology’s Rotkreuz, Switzerland office, the Vice President, Regional General Counsel, EMEA will oversee legal activities of Align’s commercial organization in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Russia. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in the technology and medical device environment as well as intellectual flexibility and versatility, solid business acumen and judgment, thoughtful, sensitive, and persuasive interpersonal skills, and outstanding leadership skills. This position will be a member of and work collaboratively with the Global Legal Leadership team and will report into the EVP, Chief Legal and Regulatory Officer, with a dotted reporting line to the EVP, Managing Director, EMEA Region of Align Technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be an active and commercially minded business partner to the EMEA Region business units and to the Legal Leadership Teams, continually working to identify strategic opportunities to increase growth/create efficiency and scale on the EMEA legal team to support growth and engage in intelligent risk-taking.
  • Lead a team of over ten lawyers and legal professionals, ensure an aligned legal strategy across the Region, and develop the talents as needed.
  • Provide simple, practical, and strategic legal advice under applicable laws for a technology and medical device company, in areas such as: interactions with healthcare professionals (notably in the context of commercial B2B negotiations but also in the context of academic collaborations, consulting and services engagements, etc.); competition law; advertising, promotion, and labeling (including experience with consumer advertising regulations and best practices in a highly regulated industry); brand protection and enforcement; anti-bribery and anti-corruption; cyber security and data governance and privacy, intellectual property, labor, employment, litigation, internal investigations, and dispute management.
  • Be a partner to the Global Public Policy, Litigation and Intellectual Property Teams and support as needed the EMEA region public policy and managed markets program to create opportunities and mitigate risks.
  • Own and drive the EMEA Regional Compliance program, working closely with the Global and Regional Compliance and Ethics and Data Governance and Privacy team. 
  • Collaborate with other members of Align’s Legal & Regulatory Leadership Team to analyze and advise Align’s business on complex legal/compliance issues that arise out of its global operations. 
  • Identify, contribute to, and/or lead legal initiatives at the enterprise level and identify areas of simplification within and outside the legal team 

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

  • Top academic credentials from a leading European university and preferably, completion of an LL.M. or J.D. at a recognized U.S. law school.
  • Admitted (in good standing) to practice law in Europe
  • At least 15 years’ combined work experience with an international law firm and in‐house corporate legal team, including experience working for a technology, medical technology, or life sciences company. Prior experience advising on consumer advertising regulations and marketing compliance in a B2B2C or direct-to-consumer business is a plus.  
  • Deep experience and knowledge of antitrust/competition law.
  • Demonstrated experience in the #1 or #2 EMEA region legal spot as a transformational leader who can identify and proactively coach and develop high-potential talent and organize legal talent to support future regional needs.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying and resolving legal issues quickly, practically, and effectively, making on-the-spot risk calls, prioritizing conflicting demands from multiple business clients in an extremely fast-paced environment. 
  • Significant experience dealing with and advising on competition law and investigations.
  • Experience navigating multiple, current crises; ability to manage a significant workload, prioritize projects appropriately, and work with little supervision. 
  • Experience supporting geographical expansion in new and high-risk markets
  • Position is based in Rotkreuz, EMEA HQ of Align, with minimum 20-30% travel required
